10 Common Hair Care Mistakes

Healthy, beautiful hair isn’t just about the right shampoo, it’s about the right habits. At our salon, we often help clients recover from common haircare mistakes that are totally fixable with just a little know-how. Here are 10 common slip-ups and how to set your strands straight!

1. Washing Too Often

Over-washing can strip your scalp’s natural oils. If your hair isn’t overly oily, try washing 2-3 times a week and using dry shampoo in between.

2. Using the Wrong Shampoo and Conditioner

Not all hair products are created equal. Curly, colour-treated, and fine hair each need different formulas. Ask your stylist for a recommendation tailored to your hair type. At Cabello, we carry Kevin Murphy and Bumble and bumble products that can tailor to all hair types.

3. Skipping Heat Protection

Every time you use a flat iron, curling wand, or blow dryer without a heat protectant, you're risking damage. A lightweight heat spray is your hair’s best friend.

4. Brushing Wet Hair with the Wrong Tool

Wet hair is fragile. Use a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush designed for wet hair to prevent breakage.

5. Towel-Drying Aggressively

Rubbing your hair dry can cause frizz and split ends. Instead, gently blot with a microfiber towel or a soft cotton T-shirt.

6. Ignoring the Scalp

Healthy hair starts at the root. Incorporate scalp massages or cleansing treatments to keep your scalp balanced and flake-free.

7. Going Too Long Between Trims

Even if you're growing your hair out, regular trims every 6–8 weeks keep your ends healthy and prevent split ends from traveling up the hair strand.

8. DIY Hair Colour Disasters

Box dye might seem convenient, but it rarely delivers salon-quality results. We’re here to help you achieve your dream colour without the damage.

9. Using Hot Tools on Dirty Hair

Using heat on unwashed hair can “cook” buildup into your strands. Make sure your hair is clean and product-free before styling.

10. Not Protecting Hair While Sleeping

Cotton pillowcases cause friction that leads to frizz and breakage. Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase—or wrap your hair in a silk scarf—to preserve your style and reduce damage.
